Library Crisis in the News

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

On June 11th, The Today Show did a segment called "Beyond Books: Libraries Lend a Hand in Recession." This video does a good job in summing up all the difficulties faced by libraries, from budget cuts to helping patrons find jobs and use the internet.

  1. Hey Stimulibrarians,
I didn't see anywhere to post general blog comments so I posting my suggestions here. So I guess that is my first suggestion - create an "about this blog" link. It might be nice to know a bit more about who you are, what the blog is about, why you created it, etc. Another suggestion I have is to change the titles of your links. For instance, instead of "http://libraryworkforce.org/tiki-index.php" replace the address with a title for the link like "Library Work Force home page." You might even be able to add a description of the link that followers can see when they hover over the link. Aside from those suggestions I think everything looks great! I especially love the voting poll.

    Good job!

  2. I thought that this video was very interesting and had a lot of good information about the role of the public library in American society, particularly during this recession. I thought it was noteworthy that 68% of the American public now has library cards and that this is the highest percentage in two decades. I also thought it was important to note that in 73% of the communities across the country, the public library is the only place where people can access the Internet for free and that this number climbs to 83% in rural areas. Obviously, libraries are more important now, when money is tight, then ever.
